UCF opens it’s 2008 football season this saturday at Bright House vs South Carolina State University at 6pm.
Background on SCSU
SCSU is a Div 1aa FCS program playing in the MEAC (Mid Eastern Athletic Conference). They are charter members of the conference and have more conference championships than any other MEAC team. This year, they are once again the preseason favorites. The historically black school located in Orangeburg was founded in 1896 and has approximately 4500 students. They are known as the bulldogs and use garnet and blue as their team colors.
NFL Alumni
Harry Carson (Giants), Deacon Jones (Rams, Chargers, Redskins), Robert Porcher (Lions), Donnie Shell (Steelers), Al Young (Steelers), Arthur Love (Patriots), Kenny Bynum (Chargers), Philip Murphy (Rams)
SCSU Players to Watch
- Malcolm Long, who takes over as starting quarterback.
- Terrance Smith will be playing both sides of the ball at Wide Receiver and Defense Back.
- Will Ford, the MEAC Rookie of the Year at running back. He’s average 6.65 yards per carry.
Game Thoughts
Expect SCSU to put up a half decent fight early — this isn’t a bad FCS program. Their RB will offer a decent chance to evaluate our defense. Offensively, this will be a great tune up game for our committee of RB’s. It’ll also give a chance for someone to fill in for Kamar Aiken, who is out for four weeks with a foot injury. Depth will be a game costing issue for SCSU once everyone tuckers out, so expect UCF bench players to see the field a bit in the second half. They’re also installing new schemes after hiring a ton of new assistants this off season — might offer a great chance for the Smoking Aces (the nickname applied to UCF’s senior defensive backs) to beef up their stats some.
I’m curious to see fan turnout for this game. BHNS is boasting 50% less sway this year, it’d be nice if we could match that claim with 100% more rowdiness. For all those new UCF students (or new UCF fans), Freshman Frenzy takes place at the UCF Arena at 3:45pm. Gavin, Bill and myself checked it out last year and it was a fun time.
